Recognising the work that needs to be done to achieve gender equality, the Victorian Government has implemented the Gender Equality Act 2020.
The Act – the first of its kind in Australia – aims to achieve gender equal workplaces in the public sector by taking steps to:
- close the gender pay gap
- improve gender equality at all levels of the workforce
- eliminate workplace sexual harassment.
Under the Act, 300 public sector employers (including local councils and universities) will need to report on and improve gender equality in the workplace.
Organisations will also be required to complete gender impact assessments to ensure that policies, programs and services consider the needs of Victorians of all genders.
