IP Australia is trialling a new online tool to make it easier for small businesses to check and register a trade mark.
The new Trade mark check tool is free to use and will streamline the trade mark research and application process.
What is a trade mark?
A trade mark is a type of property, known as 'intellectual property' or IP. A registered trade mark gives you legal protection over a part of your brand so you can take action to stop others from using it.

You can trademark any combination of these marks:
- logo, picture or shape
- word, phrase, letter or number
- sound or smell
- movement
- feature of your packaging
