Victoria’s Portable Long Service Benefits Scheme marks 3 years of supporting workers in the community services, contract cleaning and security sectors.

Introduced in 2019, the Portable Long Service Benefits Scheme allows workers in key industries to build up long service entitlements based on time spent in the industry, rather than with a single employer. This means workers in these sectors can claim long service leave after 7 years of working, regardless of how many times they’ve changed jobs.

Workers in industries included in the scheme provide crucial services that benefit our community such as:

  • contract cleaning
  • security
  • family violence prevention
  • disability support
  • accommodation support
  • home care
  • support for cultural and linguistically diverse communities

These sectors are more likely to have workers in short-term contracts with workers often changing employers. Two-thirds of scheme members are women, who have long been over-represented in low-paid, insecure jobs.

More than 2,800 employers have registered with the Portable Long Service Authority, paying a levy of 1.65 to 1.8% of a worker’s wage to fund benefits for more than 227,000 registered workers.
