The inspiration behind Myrtelford Cycle Centre
To mark World Bicycle Day, we caught up with Steve and Claire (the heart and handlebars of Myrtleford Cycle Centre) located on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail in North East Victoria. With a passion for pedals and a love of community, this husband-and-wife duo have turned their bike shop into a popular spot for adventurers and locals alike.
Steve and Claire made a tree change to Myrtleford in 2008, drawn by the lifestyle and affordability of country living. Combining their skills as a trained bicycle mechanic and bicycle transportation engineer, they took over a local bike shop.
Here’s what Steve and Claire had to say about cycling, community, and running a small business in regional Victoria.
1. What’s one local ride or tour your team always recommends?
The Town Tour is a 1-hour rolling showcase of Myrtleford village, led by a local guide who shares history, highlights and hidden gems you might otherwise miss. On warm days it includes a quick river swim if you can brave the cool alpine water! Optional stops include local wineries, farm gates, and cafes to enjoy great food and support the community.
2. In your opinion, how can cycling benefit individuals and communities?
Cycling is an easy way to stay active, whether you’re cruising on the Rail Trail or popping to the supermarket to grab a few groceries. In Myrtleford, everything is close by, making it easy to spot a friendly face along the way. Cycling is also a great way to save money on car costs, help the environment and improve your health.
3. What do you love most about working at a cycle shop?
We love helping people ride comfortably and safely. When adults hire our rental bikes (regular and electric), we love helping them reconnect with the childhood joy of cycling. There's something special about bringing a well-loved bike back to life, restored and ready for reuse, helping to cut waste and saving resources.
4. What’s one tip you’d give someone visiting Myrtleford on two wheels?
Visiting Myrtleford with your bike? Don’t miss the 4km town loop, featuring the Mosaic Trail along the pristine Ovens River. Like a treasure hunt on two wheels, you’ll spot mosaics of native animals, fairy doors, birds, a playable snakes & ladders board, and more — scattered throughout the trail and town.
A bonus tip for any cyclist: pump your tyres to the recommended pressure!
Underinflated tyres make it harder to ride and increase the risk of punctures and damage. You can use a gauge to check the air - the correct pressure range is printed on the side of the tyre. While petrol station pumps aren’t ideal for bikes, we’re always happy to offer free air at the shop!
